Scientists use bananas to make plastic bags that are also biodegradable

Researchers at the university of new south wales in Australia have found a way to turn waste from banana plantations into packaging material that can be biodegradable and recycled.

Arcot and Martina Stenzel collected banana stems at Sydney's royal botanic gardens and then set out to extract the cellulose and test its suitability as a packaging alternative.

In experiments, the researchers found that the thin film made of pseudostem cellulose decomposes into organic matter after it sits in the soil for six months.
